They have a locking mechanism which can make you feel more secure when the rod tip is angled down, however does take a second to unlock before pulling the rod out of the holder. Lunds plastic mounting system is cost effective but the rod holder mounts inside your boat and long trolling rods handle will eat away at valuable floor space. I use them to occasionally hold a rod when drifting or anchored (very rarely), and they get lots of use in trolling for walleyes and lake trout.
